NY, NY— On Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm, thousands of devoted Armenian-Americans and their friends and supporters gathered in Times Square (43rd St. & Broadway) to commemorate the first genocide of the 20th Century, The Armenian Genocide (Medz Yeghern).

This historic event was held to pay tribute to the 1.5 million Armenians who were annihilated by the Young Turk Government of the Ottoman Empire and to the millions of victims of subsequent genocides worldwide. Speakers will include civic, religious, humanitarian, educational, cultural leaders as Sen. Chuck Schumer, Sen. Bob Menendez, Rep. Frank Pallone, Rep. Carolyn Maloney, attorney Mark Geragos.

Grand Commander and Matron of the Knights and Daughters of Vartan, Dr. Gary Zamanigian and Diana Tookmanian, respectively, stressed the importance of genocide commemoration.

As Grand Commander said “It is not enough that Ottoman Turkey destroyed our Historic Armenian Homeland, sending the population to Der Zor, the equivalent of Auschwitz, the present government of Turkey has returned to the same location with a denialist’s  zeal to wipe out the last traces of our Sanctified Martyrs.

It has invaded the desert in Der Zor to crush and destroy the bones of our ancestors,  the remaining relics of testimony relating to the death march and tragic destiny of 1.5 million Armenians in 1915.

Our pain is part of the universal pain that humanity has joined forces with to eradicate and say to the world: Never again to Holocaust, never again to the Armenian Genocide.”

The Knights and Daughters of Vartan have sponsored the Times Square Armenian Genocide Commemoration since 1985. This year the event was chaired under the tutelage chairmen Hirant Gulian, Tigran Sahakyan and Ari Minnetyan.
