Guidelines for the Awards (updated on September 2023)

ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Eligible recipients include Asbeds, wives of Asbeds, members of the Daughters of Vartan, the children and grandchildren of Asbeds and Daughters of Vartan in good standing, as well as those of deceased Asbeds and Daughters, who were in good standing at the time of their demise.
  2. Applicant must be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program in a fully accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.
  3. Applicant must have at least one year of college or university program completed.
  4. Applicant must provide all of the information requested on the application form.
  5. Applicant must submit a copy of his or her most recent college transcript.
  6. Applicant is to include a small head and shoulders self-portrait.
  7. Applicants should submit applications electronically (via email) to the Sbarabed of each Tahlij. Paper submissions will be accepted, but email is preferred.
  8. When forwarding scholarship applications to the Knights of Vartan, the primary responsibility for confirming delivery lies with the applicant.
  9. Previous recipients are not eligible.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Applicants are responsible for the following.
    1. When forwarding scholarship applications, the primary responsibility for confirming delivery to the recipient lies with the applicant.
    2. Applicants should submit the forms electronically (via email) to the Sbarabed of each Tahlij. Paper submissions will be accepted; however, email is preferred.
    3. Each Sbarabed must keep a record of all applications received – name, date received, and contact information.
    4. Each Sbarabed must confirm in writing (by email) to each applicant that his or her application has been received
  2. Sbarabeds are responsible for the ensuing.
    1. Appointment of three qualified Asbeds in good standing to form a Tahlij Scholarship Committee.
    2. Maintaining a record of all applications received including name, date received, and contact information.
    3. Confirming in writing (by email) to each applicant that his or her application has been received.
    4. Scan paper applications of their finalist(s) and submit them electronically (via email) to their respective Grand District Representatives.
    5. Once applications have been submitted to the GDRs, each Sbarabed will confirm that the application(s) have been received by his GDR.
    6. Sbarabeds will scan paper applications, along with evaluations, and submit them electronically (via email) to their respective Grand District Representatives no later than April 30, 2024.
  3. Tahlij Scholarship Committee’s responsibilities are as follows.
    1. Distribute application forms to qualified students.
    2. Investigate and evaluate the information provided.
    3. Submit their selection in writing (electronically) to their Sbarabed.
  4. Grand District Representatives’ responsibilities include the following.
    1. Appointment of a panel, comprised of several qualified Asbeds, with two provisions: that there should be no more than one from any one Tahlij and that the Asbeds be unrelated to any of the applicants.
    2. The Grand District Representatives will submit their selections electronically to Avak Tivan Scholarship Committee Chairman Avak Ter Sbarabed Levon Thorose at , together with a complete list that includes the names, dates received, contact information of all applications no later than May 15, 2024
  5. Panel responsibilities are the ensuing.
    1. To weigh the merits of each applicant.
    2. To electronically submit the names of up to, but not more than, three finalists along with all applications and materials to their Grand District Representative.
  6. Avak Tivan Scholarship Committee’s responsibilities are as follows

    2. Select the three (3) Knights of Vartan scholarship winners from the finalists submitted.
    3. Confirm to the GDRs the names for the applications received from GDRs.
    4. Notify the applicant by letter of receipt of his/her application.
    5. Notify in writing applicants who were not selected and invite them to apply next year.
    6. The Avak Sbarabed and Avak Tbrabed will inform those who have been selected as one of the three (3) of their award.
